This workshop is designed to provide therapists and counsellors with context and experience of the role of the body in the therapy process. In the Satir Model there is attention paid to the body’s cues as a vehicle of communication from our inner selves to our cognitive selves. When we stop and listen, we can learn from our insides. When our clients stop and listen, they can shift from talking about their circumstance to being in their experience, thus facilitating the therapeutic experience. Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy is, its core, experiential.

One of the ways we humans cope with trauma is to shift how our energy moves and how we hold information in our bodies. Some of our traumatized parts may reside in or be connected to parts of our bodies. We might feel disconnected from them or be unaware of the information they hold for us. Using information in the body and exploring it can yield dramatic shifts intrapsychically, contextually and in relationship.

The focus of this workshop will be on how to experience and track both your own and your client’s internal state, and access the clues and wisdom inside the body, integrating it into the therapeutic experience.

The Satir Model requires that counsellors have a high level of therapeutic competence and congruence. The experiential aspects of the training will provide counsellors with opportunities to resolve some of the issues which may interfere with the therapeutic process. Counsellors will also learn tools for self-monitoring and self-referencing. Therefore, the program will aid counsellors in becoming more competent, more confident and more congruent.

Anastacia Metcalf will use lecturettes, small group discussions, structured exercises, demonstrations, experiential learning, and skill practice sessions as part of the program.  The training program will focus on experiential learning and developing and practicing skills to help therapists and counselors work with clients in a positively-directional, therapeutic and goal-oriented manner.
