Part 1

What can you expect from the workshop?

Participants will explore the neuroscience of safety, the neuroscience of the therapeutic relationship, the Transformational Systemic Therapy of Virginia Satir, and what this combination of approaches looks like in the sand tray, through theory, demonstrations and practice. This approach is effective with children and adults.

There will be two opportunities to experience the impact of this approach based on Madeleine’s book entitled ‘Where Words Can’t Reach: Neuroscience and the Satir Model in the Sand Tray.’  When figurines are placed in the sand tray they take on the transitional energy of implicit and explicit memories. In this way, the sand tray affords an externalization and reflection of the client’s whole ‘iceberg’ in the past, present and future. The impact of negative experiences for the client can then be transformed in the sand tray, internalized in the client’s mind and body and then ‘taken out’ of the sand tray. In particular, images of the client’s defenses are created and transformed.

In addition you will be given the details and suggestions for setting up your workspace for this kind of therapy work. The workshop will look at this model of sand tray therapy through the use of photographs and videos of actual sand tray sessions with adults and children. There will be at least two demonstrations by Madeleine.
